Canvassing FAQ
Why Canvass?
The Hilltop Brigade has canvassed since 2006, helping turn Connecticut’s congressional delegation completely blue. Bottom line, canvassing increases voter turnout. This year we are canvassing in Meriden to defend Jahana Hayes’ critical seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Increased Democratic turnout will also help Kamala Harris and Senator Chris Murphy’s campaigns. The Meriden Democratic Town Committee welcomes and appreciates our support.
I’ve always feel deeply satisfied when I come home from canvassing,
knowing I’ve confirmed many people will make the effort to vote. — Stephanie Farber
Why Does Canvassing Work?
Hilltop Brigade canvassers do not try to change anyone’s mind. We simply greet fellow Democrats to remind them how close the race is this year and how important their vote is. This simple, human connection is particularly effective with inconsistent voters, those who feel unmotivated or are undecided or think no one cares whether they vote. Canvassing says, we’re in this together, and you matter!
Why Canvass in Meriden?
The 5th District is purple. The last election was so close that National Republicans have targeted Jahana Haye’s seat and have committed over $1 million in advertising. A win this year for Jahana entirely depends on voter turnout. That’s what the Brigade does best: get out the vote. We are focused on Meriden because it has a large base of Democratic voters and an increase in turnout there can secure a win.
How Can I Join?

What Will Happen When I Canvass?
If you've volunteered with us before, you know our canvasses are well-organized, efficient, and produce results.
The first thing to do is sign up. We’ll send you specific information about where and when we meet.
When you arrive to canvass, we greet you and make sure everyone has a partner to canvass and a driver.
There’s a very short training where you’ll get talking points, a map, voter information handouts, and list of names and addresses of registered Democrats provided by the Meriden Democratic Town Committee.
We then span out, going door-to-door in an attempt to reach everyone on the lists. Even if no one answers, you can still leave behind important voter information and encouragement.
After completing your list, you’ll return to the meeting place to share any pertinent information with our field organizer.
